Update April 2, 2020

PSBC Family and Friends,

I pray all of you are doing well through these uncertain days. As of this writing, our Governor has tightened mandated restrictions on businesses, and the City of Greenville is considering even tighter restrictions, in order to limit the spread of the COVID – 19 virus. While I believe these are important steps to take, they bring about difficult changes. Particularly difficult for the church. Even the name “church” is from a Greek word that means “assembly.” There have been other times in the history of the church when, because of diseases or persecution, believers could not gather, and yet the church remained strong and even grew, as a result.

As we work our way through the challenges we currently face, I hope you will keep God’s Word in your mind and heart, when He spoke through Paul. “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:16-18).

Our leadership team is closely and prayerfully monitoring the situation and we are making plans to reduce the risk to our members, visitors, staff, and the surrounding area, while continuing to fulfill our mission of Glorifying God by Making Mature Disciples of All Nations.

  • Our April schedule will be the same as for March, with online worship only and most other church ministries, programs and activities cancelled. GPS and home groups have moved to an online format. As the Coronavirus situation worsens (the peak contagion is expected later this month), we feel that this schedule needs to be maintained.
  • Easter worship service will be online only. We have explored options for public worship, but with the increased restrictions in the city, we couldn’t find a way forward. Easter is the most important day on our calendar as believers, but this year we will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus in our homes.
  • We are receiving and sharing prayer requests online. To share requests, or to be added to our prayer email, please use the prayer request form at https://www.psbcgreenville.org/prayer-requests/ or email us directly at info@psbcgreenville.org.
  • We are continuing to prepare the Arlington Ave. building for church offices and weekday ministry. There are still tasks to be finished, but we are moving forward with preparing a location to connect with each other and with the West End community.

God is in control, He is good, and He is working. As His people, trusting in Him daily, “we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.” I am glad to be counted with you and look forward to seeing you all again soon.

UPDATE: 3/18/2020

Dear Pendleton Street Baptist Church family,

We appreciate your support these past couple of days as we face the challenges of dealing with the changes taking place due to the COVID – 19 Virus. As you are aware, Sunday afternoon, Governor McMaster announced the immediate closing of all schools in the state through March 31. He recommended that any gatherings of over 100 not meet for the next couple of weeks. Since his briefing Sunday, the recommendation has changed to as few as 10 people and as high as 50 people. Most recently, though things are changing daily, the Governor closed in-house dining in all restaurants. That includes the conference space at the Hilton.

We are working to respond with faith and wisdom.  The church leadership at PSBC felt that we needed to respond in some specific ways during this time. We are implementing the following changes:

  • All Sunday morning activities will be suspended until March 31.
  • We are working now to set up video streaming to enable us to have worship on March 22 and March 29 at 10:30 AM. We will send you updates on how you can view/participate in these services.
  • The church office will be open during our regular times.
  • Hospital visitation will be limited to critical care situations.
  • We are hoping that those of you who are healthy and not in an “at-risk” group (recent international travel, elderly, small children at home, etc.) will still meet for small groups with appropriate social distancing and sanitary precautions in place (both for the locations and individuals).

Please let us know how we can help you during this time. Here are ways you can reach us:

Isaiah 26:3-4 says,

3 You keep him in perfect peace

whose mind is stayed on you,

    because he trusts in you.

4 Trust in the Lord forever,

for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.

Fix your eyes on Jesus in these moments. Trust God to deliver us through our present circumstances. Take advantage of these days because I believe God will give us opportunities to declare His goodness among those who do not know Him.

God is Good!
