Thoughts on January 29 Bible Reading, by Daniel Byrd

“You planned evil against me; God planned it for good to bring about the present result.” – Genesis 50:20, HCSB

This is one of my favorite verses in all of Scripture. Joseph went through immense pain, loss, and suffering at the hands of his brothers, yet this is the conclusion he reaches. I’m sure that while he was imprisoned because of them that he had not reached this mindset. When he saw, however, what God did through all of it, then he knew that God is indeed sovereign over everything.

People will hurt you in this life. It is not a matter of “if” but of “when.” No matter how good or noble we think a person is, they are still sinners in need of God’s grace and are prone to sin. What do we do with this information? It can scare us and even cripple us in despair. We must remember what Joseph says here: God planned it for good. No matter what people put us through in life: slander, abandonment, mockery, abuse, pain, suffering, or anything else; we have to rest in knowing that God is still on His throne and while people are not perfect, He is. It is hard to remember that in the midst of the pain, but someday we will see how God worked, even in the evil plans of broken people.
