January 23, 2019

Last year we followed the 5×5 reading plan – basically five minutes of Scripture reading five days a week.  Following that plan we read through the New Testament together.  This year we are reading through the entire Bible following a seven-day plan that takes us to different types of Scripture.  As we began I was a little overwhelmed – reading multiple chapters every day and switching between books every day of the week.  But now in our 4th week I am really loving following this plan, for several reasons.
1) Clearer Context.  Reading several chapters at a time, particularly in the Law, History, and Gospels (and currently Job (Poetry), helps me to “settle in” to the narrative, and gives me a much clearer sense of the context of the accounts we are reading. For example, last week Noah and his family were in the Ark, and this week they are on dry ground (Gen. 8-9).  As some time passes and the earth is re-populated (ch. 10), it doesn’t take long until the evil intentions of mankind (Gen. 8:21) shows up again in the building of the tower of Babel (ch. 11).
2) Continuity and Variety. Reading from 7 different books a week, but the same book on the same days of the week, gives me both continuity (every Thursday reading from Job) and variety (Joshua yesterday, Psalms today).  It is a wonderful blessing that God consistently speaks through His Word to give me instructions, encouragement, and corrections for the things I am facing that day.  This morning I was speaking with a friend who is going through a very difficult time.  I was reminded, and able to remind Him,

“7 But the Lord sits enthroned forever;

    he has established his throne for justice,
and he judges the world with righteousness;
    he judges the peoples with uprightness.
The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
10 And those who know your name put their trust in you,
for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.
Psalm 9:7-10
3) Intentionality.  Reading through the Bible in this way requires intentionality.  Some days our text tells a story. Some days we are singing a song of praise to God. Some days we are sitting at the feet of Paul as he instructs us.  And on Fridays we are listening to the prophecies of Isaiah. These can be hard to understand.  Here is a link to an excellent resource on how to read the Prophets devotionally.
I am glad we are on this journey together, and I want to encourage you to be faithful in your reading of the Word of God.  Reading God’s words and God’s deeds reveal God himself to us.  Reading prayerfully, submitting to the truth of Scripture, deepens our relationship with God and changes us, transforming us into the image of Jesus.
